They say an awkward silence begins after four seconds of zero speech.
This really got me thinking though. Who feels this awkwardness? Is it not only the person who thinks long silences are awkward? And when do we feel this awkwardness? Is it only when we’re with people we’re not exactly “close” with? And why do we feel awkward anyway? Are we afraid of judgment? Are we insecure?
I don’t know.
But maybe that’s what we strive for in any relationship or friendship, it’s to build connections so deep and meaningful that even our silences cease to be awkward. We then welcome silence rather than avoid it. This way, another person’s company transcends any form of consoling speech or any act of acceptance, and presence alone is enough. Not all relationships are perfect and not all friendships are completely understanding. But we try, and that too, I think, is enough.
